As equivoque, we celebrated May 5 as seasonal day of Naotake, but are informed "iris" and "Naotake" in the Edo era, samurai family society when this is beginning of "the Boy's Festival". It became one of the annual functions in custom gradually that took a bath that we put calamus and leaf on that day and excited. Opinion to date back to China has history of sweet-flag bath in fact. In the first place it was thought that sweet flag was medicinal herb to pay illness to from old days. When Chinese people pray description of annual function "ibaraso (keiso) compendium of seasonal words" (saijiki) of the sixth century in China for longevity and health for a long time and used sweet flag, it is written down. It is time when it is easy to fall sick at seasonal turning points from spring to summer on day of Iris Festival. Therefore day of Iris Festival seemed to have many sweet rush liqueur, sweet-flag bath, manners and customs using sweet flag including wooden sword for ornament.
■Citron hot water
In Japan, there is custom to take a bath in Yubune where we floated citron on on day (every year about December 21) of winter solstice from the Edo era. Citron hot water means this, but bathroom is filled with sweet smell peculiar to citrus fruit system.
We are said "not to catch cold when we can enter citron bath" from old days and are handed down even if we prevent crack and chap that are winter skin symptom. There is strained opinion to use citron for another view because "we are flexible in "hot spring cure" and game of rhyming of "winter solstice" if it is physical staying young", but does not know reliable thing.
As ingredient which stimulates capillary, and promotes metabolism is included in essential oil bringing on fragrance of citron, it is hard to feel a chill after a bath and is said to be when there is an effect for poor circulation and rheumatism, neuralgia, low back pain, sprain, relieving fatigue.
Citron of winter solstice became custom before in each family, but is not performed too much recently. It may be said that sento of Tokyo continues following this culture exclusively.

We follow as event to memorialize day of sento every year afterward until today. We use thing which dried flower stalk of lavender cultivated in Nakafurano-cho of Hokkaido for lavender hot water to perform in sento of Tokyo.
(※) What is it on day of sento?
October 10 (former Health Sports Day) is day when the Olympics were held for the first time in our country in 1964.
Will to sports of the nation increases with this, and population playing sports for health increases year by year. Because it is proved by experiment that taking a bath after having sweated by sports and bathing in sento are good for health, it may be said that sports and bathing are related closely.
By such a reason, we applied to association for October 10 (1010 = sen canes) on Japanese memorial day as "day of sento", and we were authorized formally in 1996 by the association.
※We were changed on second Monday of October from 2000 in Health Sports Day by law revision of 1998.
